100% Purée Love

There’s a healthy new lunch spot in town, and it’s BYOB: Bring Your Own Baby. Purée promises to be the new headquarters for the ladies who lunch (with their little ones), but strollers aren’t required. The menu is filling a void in Charleston for anyone craving a tasty vegetarian, vegan or gluten free meal minus the hippie staff and patchouli aroma.

It started with baby food. Jenan McClain had a new daughter and a desire to feed her as organically as possible. So hours of each day were dedicated to slicing, mashing, mixing and, you guessed it, pureeing. There had to be an easier way to provide fresh, organic meals without the wasted time.

And that tiny seed of an idea sprouted- wait for it- organically. First came the location. The cottage in Mt Pleasant demanded more than simply baby food to go: it was begging for outdoor seating, a laid-back atmosphere and fully functioning restaurant. Next came Kelli Peterson through a Craig’s List ad. Kelli’s background as a holistic food counselor, nutrition educator and Whole Foods chef determined that the restaurant would be for grown-ups as well. Finally, Jenan decided to pool together all of the non-toxic products she had spent her pregnancy seeking out into a small boutique within the restaurant. From natural pacifiers to finger paint made from veggies, everything your eco-conscious, healthy baby needs is available.

Organic cotton onesies and mashed bananas aside, the café is sure to attract some serious foodies. Think: shitake BLTs, tempeh sausage and mock-tuna salad packed into a nori-wrap.  And be sure to save room for dessert: if you’re not swiping your son’s homemade popsicle, you can indulge in some mouth-watering chocolate pudding, vegan of course, or one of pastry chef Cynthia Huggins’ baked goodies.

Currently serving breakfast, lunch, Sunday brunch and offering baby food memberships, Puree’s goal is simple: whole foods for the whole family.

I had lunch at purée last weekend! It was the best vegetarian and vegan food I have ever had! Not to mention the vegan cookies were to die for. If your able to, definitely check this place out. It’ll prove meat eaters that vegetarian food is just as wonderful as any other meals.

Had brunch at purée and it was absolutely perfect in every way. The food is fabulous and the space is absolutely stunning. Beautiful food and love the energy of the owners – you can tell it is a labor of love. So thankful to have this as a healthy and delicious dining option in Mount Pleasant.
