Mo Bros: One Stache at a Time

If you’ve seen a 1980′s porn star strutting down our cobblestone streets lately, you’re not alone. Or maybe you swore you just saw Ron Burgundy. Thin, full, handlebar, curled or otherwise…one question is bound to be on everyone’s mind this month: What is with all the mustaches in Charleston?

The answer: Movember.

This world-wide, annual, month-long celebration of the “moustache” has found its way to our city. But don’t think this is about some silly group of men. The purpose of the furry adornments is to bring attention to and raise money for prostate and testicular cancer. In fact, Movember has raised $47 million globally to date, making it the world’s largest charity event for men. Movember's Jeff Webster

And we have a group of Mo Bros right here among us.

Dubbed “Team Mo-Country,” local residents Jeff Webster, Lou Fabian, Nick Tompkins and Henry Mathieu are out to change the face of men’s health.

Webster, the pseudo team leader, has been a longtime supporter of cancer research. It was his experience as the PR guy for the Children’s Hospital Boston foundation that led him to running a marathon in memory of a child he came to know with terminal cancer.

“If I can run 26.2 miles for cancer, then I can certainly walk around looking like an idiot for a month for cancer,” Webster says.

Fabian, who lost a brother and sister to developmental issues, has been active in too many Charleston charitable initiatives to count. Although he’s not a fan of the spotlight, he’ll do whatever it takes to raise funds for these worthy causes.

Movember's Nick TompkinsTompkins is simply carrying on the tradition and jokes that it adds to his “dreamy” quality.

When we ask Mathieu why he’s participating in Movember, he just answers with a straight face, “what are you talking about?”

Ladies, while the stache growing will be left to the men, Mo Sistas (that’s you) are an essential part of making Movember a success! Support your Mo Bros (both financially and emotionally – i.e. not threatening to leave your husband’s new seriously questionable face), spread the word and encourage others to join the cause.

This Movember, funds raised in the US will be split between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
